Alexis Blue from New Brighton were originally meant to headline the Roadkill gig, which would have been good as they are very popular locally, usually pulling a good crowd and getting their video played on Channel 4, the big screens in Liverpool city centre and before Tranmere Rovers home matches.
Unfortunately one of their gigs at the Liverpool Academy has been postponed and after agreeing to play my night, the Liverpool Academy came back to them with the Saturday after my gig - and the rules say that they can't play other gigs a week either side of it.

You can see it from their side, would you rather play an Academy venue where all the big bands play on a Saturday night when all your mates/fans can come and see you, or a little pub on a Wednesday night?
As a replacement I managed to book The Container Drivers who came all the way from Leeds to play the gig. They'd been played by John Peel himself and had taken part in a Fall cover compilation.
Our friend from across the road who is in her 70s insisted on coming along, despite warnings that it might not be her kind of thing. But she loved it and I thought about doing a punk for pensioners night - and I'm only half joking!
On arrival the sound man told me it was his first night, and could he leave early as he had to catch his last train. Then I found out that although they had promised someone to do the door it had fallen through. What a start to the night! No wonder if closed down not long afterwards.
The bands were great, particularly The Mono LPs who had everyone impressed - particularly our neighbour!
| "Now if only we'd had another 100 like him then we'd have been sorted" |
One bloke was pogoing like a mentalist to The Dead Shores who'd come from Wigan for the gig and sounded like a cross between HMHB and The Wedding Present. Now if only we'd had another 100 like him then we'd have been sorted.
I felt sorry for The Container Drivers, they'd come all the way from Leeds, it was the drummers birthday, and after all that, by the time they took to the stage there was hardly anyone there, and the streets outside were deserted. So much for city of culture.
Again there were important European football matches on tv keeping some pubs busy - I went back the following week to check out other venues and not only were the music venues quiet, but the pubs that had been busy with the football were practically empty.
Sods law, I'd invited my old school friend along to come and experience the nights. Having told him how good some of the London ones were, both Liverpool nights ended up a bit of a disaster in terms of turnout and therefore atmosphere, not to mention financially.
Still Mr Von Pip from the Von Pip Express came down, and we'd been talking about doing a night together. Stay Tuned!
